Overview

Reformed Refinement is a technology that unlocks the Reformed Refinement process in the Chemical Plant, giving access to an alternate refining route that uses Hydrogen together with oil products. It is mainly used as a way to manage byproducts and improve resource efficiency in the early and mid game, especially when expanding oil processing and coal conversion lines.

The process is closely tied to Plasma Refining and X-ray Cracking. With Plasma Refining, it provides a way to deal with the Hydrogen produced by that process instead of letting it stall production. With X-ray Cracking, it lets you turn excess Refined Oil and Hydrogen into more Energetic Graphite, effectively producing twice as much Energetic Graphite from Coal as Arc Smelting while consuming only a small amount of Hydrogen and Refined oil as catalyst inputs. Those catalyst inputs are not consumed, so the recipe is valuable for converting surplus oil products into a more useful fuel and intermediate.

A common use case is to pair the process with oil refining lines so that Hydrogen can be fed back into production rather than accumulating. This is especially important for X-ray Cracking, since the recipe depends on having enough Hydrogen available to keep the line running. When setting up a new refining block, it is useful to plan for both input and output belts from the start, and to leave room for buffering if needed.

  • Reformed Refinement is most useful when your oil setup produces more Hydrogen than you can otherwise spend.
  • When using Plasma Refining, it helps prevent Hydrogen backup and keeps the refining chain running smoothly.
  • When using X-ray Cracking, it improves Coal efficiency by converting Refined oil and Hydrogen into Energetic Graphite.
  • A compact setup often uses parallel belt lanes for input and output, with Chemical Plants arranged on the output side and copied across the row for consistency.
  • If needed, Storage Tanks can be added as a buffer for Refined oil, since the liquid cannot be stored on belts.

This technology and its process were previously known as Reforming Refine.
