Spoiled Food

Overview
Spoiled Food is part of Necesse’s food spoilage system, an optional survival mechanic introduced in version v0.23.0. When this feature is enabled, food can decay over time instead of remaining usable indefinitely, making storage and travel supplies more important than in modes with spoilage disabled.
The spoilage system can be turned off by disabling Survival Mode. Doing so affects only two things: food spoilage and settlers leaving the settlement if they remain hungry for too long. In practice, that means Spoiled Food is only relevant in playthroughs where Survival Mode stays enabled.
A few tools affect how quickly food reaches this state:
- A working Cooling Box reduces spoilage to 25%, making food take four times longer to spoil.
- A Lunchbox reduces spoilage to 50%, slowing decay, though not as much as a cooled Cooling Box.
Because spoilage is tied to food management rather than a separate combat or crafting progression, the main value of Spoiled Food is as a warning sign that stored supplies have been left too long without preservation. Players who rely on long expeditions, stockpiled meals, or settlement food reserves should account for spoilage when deciding where to keep food and whether to invest in cooling options.
The game also distinguishes between two tiers of Simple Food, with Tier 1 being more nutritious and Tier 2 being less nutritious, but the spoilage system itself applies independently of that tier distinction.
