Hydrogen Generator
Overview
Hydrogen Generator is a highly efficient power building that burns Hydrogen Gas to produce electricity while generating almost no waste. Compared with many other generators, it produces little heat and no meaningful byproducts, which makes it one of the cleanest and easiest power sources to manage once a colony has a steady hydrogen supply.
Its main strength is that it pairs well with multiple hydrogen production chains. If a Hydrogen Vent is available, its output can be cooled, pumped, and stored for later use, allowing the generator room to keep running even when the vent is dormant. Hydrogen storage is also compact: a full Gas Reservoir holds the equivalent of 8000 kJ of power, the same as 200 Jumbo Batteries or 80 Battery Modules in storage value, while taking far less space than direct electrical storage. Because the reservoir has no power runoff, it is an effective buffer for intermittent sources.
The most common renewable supply is an Electrolyzer setup. Water can be split into oxygen and hydrogen, and the hydrogen can then be fed directly into Hydrogen Generators. In a balanced system, the generator output can cover much or all of the power cost of the electrolyzer room itself, with some surplus remaining. A typical oxygen-production layout uses water pumping, Electrolyzers, Gas Pumps, and Hydrogen Generators together, so the oxygen side of the base and part of its power grid are supported by the same loop.
Some practical considerations apply when using hydrogen for power:
- A hydrogen-based power room is best treated as a buffered system rather than a fully constant one, since vents and other sources can stop producing for stretches of time.
- Stockpiling hydrogen smooths out downtime and lets the generator keep supplying the base during gaps in production.
- When hydrogen comes from an Electrolyzer, the setup should be carefully balanced; if it is used only as a dedicated power source, oxygen output can become excessive and difficult to handle.
- Because the building emits very little waste heat, it often needs less temperature control than other power rooms.
- If enough hydrogen is available, it is usually worth prioritizing Hydrogen Generator use over direct electrical storage, since it stores energy more efficiently in gas form.
Hydrogen can come from several other sources besides Electrolyzers. Hydrogen Vents provide hot hydrogen that can be cooled and stored. In the DLC, Plug Slugs and some of their variants produce hydrogen when fed metal ore or refined metal, making them a biological power source as well as a hydrogen source. Saturn Critter Trap also produces hydrogen after eating Critters, though it requires cold conditions. Hydrogen found in space locations can also support power systems, especially when combined with regeneration rates and periodic rocket harvesting.
Hydrogen Generator is therefore most valuable in colonies that can maintain a reliable hydrogen chain. It excels as a clean, low-maintenance power source, especially when paired with storage and a steady production loop, and it is often one of the best ways to turn excess hydrogen into stable electricity.
