Manual Generator
Overview
The Manual Generator is the colony’s earliest source of power and is often required to get a base running before more advanced generators come online. It remains useful later in the game because it consumes no fuel, and it can be used to bring power to remote projects or to start self-sustaining systems, such as an Electrolyzer and Hydrogen Generator setup.
Duplicants can be assigned to operate a Manual Generator through the Operate task. Doing so trains Machinery and Athletics over time, so the building is also a convenient way to turn early power production into useful skill growth. Watching Duplicants run on it is not just functional; it also serves as a morale-friendly centerpiece when placed in a well-ventilated, well-decorated area.
Several details determine how efficiently it performs. Duplicants stop running the Manual Generator when at least one connected battery is full, which prevents excess generation from being wasted. Because of that, a battery threshold setting is important: a lower threshold reduces how often Duplicants make trips to the generator, while a higher threshold keeps power reserves fuller but can cause unnecessary interruptions if set too aggressively. Setting the threshold to 100% is inefficient, since the generator task can be repeatedly added back to the queue as batteries fill and empty. The best setting depends on colony demand, but the goal is to keep power available through the night without forcing all Duplicants to spend their time generating electricity.
If no batteries are connected, Duplicants will begin operating the generator whenever a power consumer is active, which can waste power if production exceeds consumption. For that reason, at least one battery is recommended unless generation and usage are already closely matched. Batteries also lose a small amount of charge over time and generate heat, so using fewer batteries is more efficient but requires more frequent charging.
The Manual Generator is especially valuable in the early game, but it can still support smaller building clusters later on. It is also useful for localized power production in remote construction sites, where running a long power line would be inconvenient. In some designs, it can even be paired with outgoing transformers so that Duplicants continue exercising while a battery on the other side controls when charging occurs.
A few practical considerations make a big difference:
- Keep the generator area supplied with oxygen and ventilated for Carbon Dioxide, since Duplicants may spend a lot of time there.
- Improve decor around the generator to help offset stress from repeated labor.
- If building a gym for Machinery and Athletics training, place it where specialists are less likely to be pulled away from other jobs.
- When using multiple Manual Generators, combining high and low battery thresholds can help keep some generators active while others serve as backup.
The Manual Generator is simple, dependable, and resource-free, which is why it stays relevant far beyond the opening hours of a colony.
