The Lab Desk is a decorative research-related building found in the game’s world as the personal desk of a departed lab technician. Its flavor text presents it as an old, quaint, and somewhat mysterious workstation, hinting that the computer attached to it may still contain something interesting. In practical terms, it is associated with research buildings and research speed bonuses rather than being a standalone progression tool.

The Lab Desk itself provides a 10% research speed bonus to scientific buildings. This bonus uses additive stacking, meaning it is added to other research speed modifiers rather than multiplying them separately. Research speed can also be increased by other factors, including lighting and a Duplicant’s Science skill, so the Lab Desk is one part of a broader research-speed setup.

A few research stations have unusual base research speeds, which matters when combining bonuses:

• The Research Station has a base research speed of 300%.
• The Super Computer also has a base research speed of 300%.
• The Virtual Planetarium likewise has a base research speed of 300%.
• The Materials Study Terminal has a normal base research speed of 100% despite also granting science points.

Because all research speed bonuses are additive, the Lab Desk’s 10% increase is simply added into the total. For example, a Duplicant with no Science skill bonus researching at a Research Station has an effective speed of 3333 g Dirt/s, while at a Super Computer the rate is 2500 g Water/s. These numbers reflect the way the game applies the research modifiers to the building’s base speed.

The Lab Desk’s main value is therefore not as a research device itself, but as a source of a small research-speed boost for scientific infrastructure. Since the bonus is modest, it is best viewed as a supportive bonus that helps optimize an already-established research operation rather than a critical early-game requirement.
