Petroleum Engine

The Petroleum Engine is a rocket engine building used to propel rockets in Oxygen Not Included. It appears in both the base game and Spaced Out!, and it is visually very similar to the Small Petroleum Engine, with only a slight difference in appearance between versions. Like other rocket engines, it is part of the rocket system used to send Duplicants into space and recover rare resources.

Compared to the Small Petroleum Engine, the Petroleum Engine trades efficiency for better performance: it is faster, can reach a slightly higher maximum height, and is about half as efficient while traveling through space. It is also built from Steel instead of Refined Metal, and it requires a Large Liquid Fuel Tank, similar to the relationship between the Radbolt Engine and the Hydrogen Engine.

• A common standard rocket layout for this engine is Petroleum Engine, 2 Large Liquid Fuel Tanks, 1 Liquid Oxidizer Tank, Spacefarer Module, Liquid Cargo Tank, and a Basic Nosecone.
• This layout provides 20 hexes of range, lets the Liquid Cargo Tank supply water for Lavatories and Sinks, and gives the Spacefarer Module enough range to keep Duplicants alive until the rocket reaches its destination.
