Spacefarer Module

Overview

The Spacefarer Module is the crewed rocket compartment used to keep Duplicants alive during space travel. Its flavor text implies it is a nosecone, but it actually requires an attached Basic Nosecone to function. The module’s interior starts as a sealed, vacuum-filled chamber with built-in special walls and fittings, and it can be placed on a Rocket Platform even without an engine, allowing it to be constructed anywhere on an asteroid rather than only in the Space Biome.

A newly built Spacefarer Module contains a Rocket Control Station in the center, along with built-in wall sections such as Rocket Wall, Rocket Window, and gas/liquid ports for exchanging materials with the outside while grounded. The module’s interior is insulated from the rocket’s exterior environment in every way, including temperature, gas and liquid leakage, and radiation. This makes it useful not only for rocketry but also as a compact controlled room for farming, ranching, industry, and other specialized setups.

The interior is designed around the journey rather than fixed furnishings, so the player must outfit it for the mission. In practice, this usually means providing at least a bed, toilet, food, and oxygen for trips that commonly last 2–10 cycles. The Rocket Control Station is necessary for takeoff and destination changes, though it is not strictly required during flight if the flight speed penalty is acceptable. The station can be deconstructed and rebuilt elsewhere, and it does not count as industrial machinery; the same is true of module fittings.

A few details make the module especially flexible:

  • Built-in liquid and gas input/output ports can move fluids into or out of the module while the rocket is grounded.
  • When the rocket is in space, output ports do nothing, while input ports vent their contents into space. This can be used to purge accumulated carbon dioxide and remove heat with gas.
  • Dedicated floor fittings can automate loading supplies into the module, including liquid output fittings, gas output fittings, and conveyor loader fittings, but each requires the appropriate cargo module or tank elsewhere in the rocket.
  • Liquid refueling is more involved: a Liquid Intake Fitting, a Liquid Cargo Tank or Large Liquid Cargo Tank, and a Liquid Rocket Port are needed, along with piping to connect the fuel path. Temperature-sensitive fuels may require insulated piping, and an overfill cutoff system is also needed.

For layouts, Metal Tiles made from Gold are commonly recommended for walkable surfaces, with Carpeted Tile useful where Duplicants spend time, such as sleeping areas, because it improves movement and adds decor for morale. Floors can be arranged with Pneumatic Doors to create climbable sections and reduce ladder use. Since carbon dioxide buildup and heat management eventually need to be addressed, many players plan the interior around ventilation and cooling from the start.

The module’s walls cannot be deconstructed by Duplicants, but they can be destroyed by other means. This has led to an exploit where players melt the Steel walls at 2426.9°C or the Diamond sections at 3926.9°C to expand the usable interior far beyond the intended 10x8 space. The two tiles containing the Rocket Hatch are a special case and are typically around 21°C, making them less affected by ordinary temperature changes unless Drywall or Temp Shift Plates are involved.
