Thermo Sensor
Overview
The Thermo Sensor is an automation building used to compare the temperature of a space or nearby device against a set threshold and output a signal for temperature-based control. It is commonly paired with buildings that need to turn on and off automatically as conditions change, especially heating and cooling equipment.
In practice, the Thermo Sensor is most often used to keep thermal machinery from wasting power or overheating. A Thermo Sensor placed close to a Thermo Aquatuner can monitor both the machine itself and the fluid or medium around it, making it much easier to regulate a cooling loop. This is especially important because the Aquatuner can move large amounts of heat very quickly, so it can overshoot a target temperature if it is not controlled carefully. The same basic approach applies to other temperature-sensitive setups, such as turning a Space Heater on only when a room drops below the desired level or disabling a Polymer Press before it overheats.
- For Aquatuner setups, placing the Thermo Sensor close to or directly next to the machine gives reliable control.
- Steel is the most dependable material for this kind of setup in the early and mid-game; Thermium is the best choice in the late game.
- When using high-end cooling materials, control becomes much more important because the temperature changes happen faster and the risk of overcooling increases.
- A Thermo Sensor is also useful in Drecko farms, where a Space Heater may be toggled to maintain the desired room temperature.
Because of the amount of heat involved, a Thermo Sensor is often part of a larger automation loop rather than a standalone device. It is particularly valuable when paired with high-throughput thermal buildings, since the sensor can prevent them from running continuously and help keep a room, machine, or coolant loop within a narrow temperature band.
Thermo Sensor-based control is also relevant in special cases where temperature limits matter more than raw cooling power. For example, it can help prevent equipment from reaching unsafe temperatures, or keep a heated room from drifting too far above the target. In this role, it is one of the most practical automation tools for managing climate-sensitive industrial and ranching builds.
