Official description

An advancement on the original G.A.S.S. 'Security Bot' designed by Dr. Alice Mayfield and Dr. Stewart Wakeman, the Gate Automated Defense Droid is a militarized prototype currently undergoing field tests.

Deployed prematurely during the Order's invasion, the unit's friend/foe distinction capabilities are a work in progress. Notably, the tendency of its rear power unit to explode under heavy damage is yet to be rectified.

Overview

The Defense Bot is a hostile GATE Automated Defense Droid and a militarized development of the original Security Bot. It is encountered patrolling day and night, rather than spawning from Charging Pods, and it is one of the more dangerous robots in the game because of its long-range explosives, strong melee options, and high durability. Its friend-or-foe recognition is still unfinished, so it attacks the player, Order soldiers, Deployable Objects placed near its patrol route, and essentially anything that comes into range.

Visually, it resembles the Security Robot and Containment Robot, but with a red accent color, a grenade launcher mounted in its right hand, and a Rear Power Unit replacing the usual soda dispenser. That rear unit is marked with an explosives hazard sign and emits a distinct deep beep when damaged. The bot also has extra armor plating on its thighs, reinforcing its militarized look.

In combat, the Defense Bot can sprint once engaged and may begin by fighting at long range if the target is distant, or close the gap quickly if it is nearby. When it gets into close proximity, it switches to explosive attacks and frequently repositions between volleys. Its attacks include:

  • Cannon Punch: a melee arm swing
  • Cannon Lunge: a forward-moving melee strike
  • Frag Grenade: multiple grenades fired in succession
  • Molotov: a contact-detonating incendiary projectile that creates a burning area
  • Mortar: a high-arc explosive shot with a large splash radius

The Defense Bot is especially deadly because it can spot enemies from farther away than other robots, and its grenade launcher can punish players at almost any distance. Its melee attacks are stronger than those of earlier robots, but they can still be blocked, and unlike previous Gate Robots it does not inflict an electrical stun effect. When it attacks, it crouches down facing its target and cannot move and attack at the same time, which creates brief windows to strike back or attempt to stun it during its self-destruct sequence.

A major weakness is the Rear Power Unit on its back. Sustained damage to that component will trigger a flashing alarm and eventually cause the robot to explode violently, destroying it regardless of its remaining health. The torso itself does not function like a normal kill zone: when the torso health reaches zero, further damage is redirected to the head health pool instead, so its effective durability is much higher than it first appears. Hitting the eye, which counts as the head, or the backpack/rear unit is the best way to end the fight efficiently.

The Defense Bot drops useful robotics materials on death, including a Reinforced CPU, Frag Grenades, and Rebar, and it can also yield Tech Scrap, Coil Winding, Transformer Bushings, Coils, Robot Oil, and a Toroidal Power Transformer. Its Compendium entry notes that its rear power unit’s tendency to explode under heavy damage is an unfinished flaw in the design.

It can be found as wrecked units in the Security Sector and as two active Defense Bots near the Jotun on a hill in the Cloud Reactor. Unlike other robots, it does not drop Soda cans.
