Berley Box

Overview
The Berley Box is a deployable bait item crafted with Ted Selly and used to lure specific animals to a chosen spot for a limited time. Different Berley Box variants attract different targets, including Crocos, Bush Devils, Fish, and Sharks. When active, the box emits a colorful smoke effect that matches the animal type it is attracting, making it easy to tell that it is working.
After placement, the box can spawn up to three baited animals of its associated type near it. If one of those animals is hunted, trapped, or otherwise removed, another will spawn later until the cap is reached again, as long as the box is still active. Animals created this way remain in the world even after the Berley Box stops working, so it can be used to build up a local population before the item expires.
Berley Boxes can be placed on land or in water, but placement matters for what they can attract. Croco, Shark, and Fish Berley Boxes are intended to be placed in water, while land-based variants are used for terrestrial creatures. The fish version has its own behavior: it attracts fish when placed in water, and if there are fewer than five fish within its radius, it will continue spawning extra fish every few seconds for the duration.
A Berley Box stays active for a fixed period before turning into an empty cage. The standard active period is two minutes, after which the smoke stops and the box is no longer attracting animals. The Fish Berley Box lasts longer, remaining active for five minutes. Once inactive, the box can still be picked up, but doing so causes the item to disappear from the world.
- Only one baited population cap applies per animal type, even if multiple Berley Boxes for that type are placed nearby.
- The smoke color is part of the activation feedback and matches the kind of animal being lured.
- Using a Berley Box is a controlled way to gather a small group of a specific creature type without waiting for natural spawning.
- Because spawned animals remain after deactivation, it is useful to create a target group first and then clean up the box afterward.
