Overview

Ted Selly is a wandering NPC who visits the island at random locations and sells hunting gear that the player cannot craft themselves. He is one of the island’s traveling merchants and is tied to Hunting Licence Level 2, which is required before he can appear. When he spawns, a whistle sounds and a notification appears under the minimap; he only whistles once per day.

Ted normally tries to appear after 3:00 PM on Saturdays. He can spawn anywhere on the map except deep water, but only on walkable tiles and never too close to another NPC, since he needs at least 200 tiles of separation. If the Airport has been built, he can also be found in the Great Bite on Saturdays. If the player has not travelled to the Great Bite, he follows the standard wandering spawn rules instead.

The Wish Fountain can change his appearance schedule. With the Peaceful Wish active, Ted does not visit the island at all. With the Dangerous Wish active, he is more likely to appear after 3:00 PM on Sunday and Wednesday as well as Saturday. During the Sky Fest event, he has a special appearance on the 8th of Autumn: if he spawns on Sunday under the Dangerous Wish during the event time, he is found flying a kite.

Ted uses a battle shovel to defend himself from aggressive animals, and at night he carries a bat zapper, which can make him easier to spot in the dark. His appearance and outfit make him one of the more distinctive wandering NPCs on the island.

Ted’s trade focus is meat and hunting-related goods. He pays twice as much as John’s Goods for animal products, making him the best buyer for hunting hauls. He will purchase:

  • any animal meat, raw or cooked
  • bugs
  • fish
  • cooked fish
  • cooked critters

He also buys a selection of Cooking Table products, alongside his catalogue of hunting gear. His shop inventory includes throwable or trap-like hunting tools and other equipment useful for catching or luring creatures, as well as a torch that bats hate. The catalogue also includes bulk crafting options for some items.

His most useful role is as a premium buyer for anything obtained through hunting or fishing, especially meat and bug catches that would otherwise be sold for less elsewhere. If you are planning a hunting run, it is worth saving animal drops for Ted rather than selling them to other shops.
