Overview

Fractal silicon is a rare natural silicon ore with a distinctive geometric fractal structure. As the single crystal grows larger, smaller branches of silicon crystals grow from the matrix, forming a natural purification mechanism; in general, the deeper the fractal generation, the higher the purity. Fractal silicon with more than six generations can be used directly as a raw material for Crystal Silicon.

In gameplay terms, Fractal silicon is a rare item, natural resource, rare material, and crafting material that effectively shortcuts Crystal silicon production. Crystal silicon normally takes two steps from Silicon Ore, so this resource occupies a similar niche to Kimberlite Ore in terms of production convenience. However, its practical value is limited by demand: Crystal silicon is not consumed in large quantities, and its only permanent sink is Particle Broadband for the Information Matrix. For that reason, using Fractal silicon primarily to save Silicon ore usually has only a small overall impact.

Its main advantage is not resource savings but production speed and compactness. Because it produces Crystal silicon in one step instead of two, it can reduce the number of required production buildings. This makes it useful when you want to fit a Blueprint into a fixed area but are short on space by a small margin.

  • Standard Crystal silicon production uses a Smelter, but Fractal silicon-based production uses an Assembler.
  • Since the item is mainly a convenience material rather than a major efficiency breakthrough, it is best treated as a layout and throughput aid.
  • It is most valuable in tight factory builds where simplifying the production chain matters more than maximizing ore conservation.
