Overview

Reaper is a boss encountered in Necesse that uses a pattern of repeated charges, summoned minions, and a boomeranging scythe. The fight begins with four ramming attacks, after which Reaper stops to summon several Reaper Spirits that will chase the player until they are destroyed. He then resumes movement and starts throwing his scythe, which returns to him like a boomerang. This cycle continues until his health is reduced below 50%.

At that point, the fight becomes more aggressive. Reaper’s charges are faster, and after completing them he disappears and summons two portals instead of stopping normally, spawning the same Reaper Spirits. He also gains teleportation during his scythe attack, making it harder to keep track of his position while he is attacking. The encounter rewards sustained movement and quick target switching, since the summoned spirits must be cleared while still avoiding Reaper’s own attacks.

A few practical points make the fight easier:

  • During the first phase, be ready for the four initial rams in a row before Reaper pauses. That pause is the safest opening to deal damage.
  • The Reaper Spirits are part of the fight’s pressure. Leaving them alive reduces your room to dodge and makes the battle much harder to control.
  • When Reaper throws his scythe, keep moving so you are not caught by both the outgoing and returning paths.
  • After he drops below half health, his faster charges and teleportation make predictable positioning much less reliable, so staying mobile becomes even more important.
  • The portal summons in the second phase mean that the add-spawn pressure continues even when Reaper is not directly on screen.

Defeating Reaper is required for the Elder to give the Hoverboard, making this boss an important progression point as well as a combat challenge.
