Overview

The Swamp Guardian is the fifth boss the Elder wants you to kill. It is summoned in the Swamp Caves using a Spiked Fossil. Once defeated, the Elder rewards you with a Homestone and a Waystone.

In combat, the Swamp Guardian behaves like a fast-moving, snakelike creature that repeatedly tries to ram the player. It dives in and out of the ground, circles above ground to line up hits, and constantly throws projectiles while moving. As it takes damage, it fires even more projectiles, so the fight becomes increasingly dangerous the longer it lasts. Its speed also increases greatly as it nears death, making the final phase the most hectic part of the battle.

The boss is made up of many segments, and each segment has its own hitbox. This makes area-of-effect weapons and damage-over-time effects especially effective, since they can strike multiple parts of the body at once. Bombs are a low-investment way to deal heavy damage quickly, and the Lightning Hammer from Dungeon is also very effective. Poison damage from Spider Armor can help wear it down as well. Because of the segmented hitbox, placing Thorns in the area where you plan to fight can be extremely strong: each thorn can damage every segment that touches it, which can drain the boss’s health very quickly. The downside is that this can also trigger a large burst of projectiles when the Swamp Guardian passes through a thorn patch.

If trying to kill it through sustained damage causes its projectile spam to become overwhelming, using Resilience and attacking more slowly with a single-target weapon can be safer. Ivy Armor with the helmet is especially useful here, since it grants +20 max resilience, which is the highest armor value available before Desert or Forest Deep Cave, and it also drops toxic goo when hit, functioning in a way similar to Thorns.

  • The Swamp Guardian’s body segments each have separate hitboxes, so multi-hit weapons are highly efficient.
  • Area damage and damage-over-time effects outperform slow, focused attacks when you can safely keep pressure on the boss.
  • Thorns can shred its health if it is forced to move through them, but this can also make the fight much more dangerous.
  • Its projectile output increases as it loses health, and its movement becomes faster near death, so the end of the fight is the hardest part.

In version 0.21.12, its head, body, razor, and boulder damage values were reduced.
