Insulated Liquid Pipe

Overview

Insulated Liquid Pipe is a utility building used to move liquids while greatly reducing heat exchange with the surrounding environment. It is the liquid-pipe equivalent of insulation: instead of allowing contents to rapidly match the temperature of nearby tiles or fluids, it slows temperature change during transit, making it useful whenever a routed liquid must stay hot, cold, or simply stable.

Its insulating effect comes from two parts. First, the pipe inherits the thermal conductivity of the construction material, but that conductivity is reduced to 3.125% of the material’s value. Second, when the game calculates heat exchange between the liquid inside and the pipe itself, it uses the lower conductivity value rather than the average used by regular Liquid Pipe. The pipe also has 400% mass, which means the same amount of exchanged DTU changes its temperature less than a normal pipe would. Together, these properties make heat transfer through Insulated Liquid Pipe much slower than through standard piping.

This makes it especially valuable in places where ordinary pipes would quickly absorb or lose heat. For example, liquid coming from a Glass Forge can be damaged if Molten Glass cools and freezes too quickly in transit, so insulated piping helps prevent pipe damage. It is also useful in cooling loops using a Thermo Aquatuner, where the liquid in the input or output line may otherwise be reheated by hot surroundings before it reaches its destination. In general, if the liquid’s temperature matters, insulated piping is the safer choice.

A few practical notes help get the most out of it:

  • Igneous Rock and Ceramic are the preferred construction materials because they provide strong insulation.
  • Insulation is even better reserved for the most extreme cases, since Insulated Liquid Pipe already covers most everyday needs.
  • If the goal is only to save on insulation material, Liquid Bridge can be used because it does not exchange heat with its contents.

In short, Insulated Liquid Pipe is the standard solution for protecting transported liquids from unwanted temperature changes. It is not a complete substitute for active cooling or heating, but it is one of the most important tools for preserving thermal control in liquid systems.
