Insulated Gas Pipe

Overview

Insulated Gas Pipe is a pipe variant used to transport gas while minimizing temperature change during transit. It serves the same basic transport role as Gas Pipe, but is designed for situations where the contents must remain close to their current temperature rather than exchanging heat with the surrounding environment. This makes it useful for preserving hot or cold gases across long distances, especially when routing through areas with very different ambient temperatures.

Its thermal behavior is much more resistant to heat transfer than a regular gas pipe. The pipe’s thermal conductivity is reduced to 3.125% of the material it is built from. When the game calculates heat exchange between the pipe and the gas inside it, it uses the lower of the two thermal conductivity values instead of averaging them as with regular gas pipes. In practice, this means the insulated pipe tends to dominate the heat transfer calculation and slows exchange with its contents.

The pipe also has 16 times the mass of a Gas Pipe, which gives it a much larger heat capacity. As a result, its temperature changes more slowly for the same amount of exchanged heat, further reducing how quickly either the pipe or its contents can gain or lose heat to nearby tiles. This combination of lower conductivity and greater thermal mass makes Insulated Gas Pipe far better at keeping transported gas from undergoing abrupt temperature swings.

In most cases, ordinary building materials with inherently low thermal conductivity are enough to make effective insulated piping. Mafic Rock, Igneous Rock, and Sedimentary Rock are generally sufficient for standard use. More extreme temperature-management setups may call for Ceramic, and in the most demanding cases even Insulation is needed.

  • Use Insulated Gas Pipe when you need gas to arrive at its destination at nearly the same temperature it had on input.
  • It is especially valuable for hot gas lines, cold gas lines, and long transport routes crossing biome boundaries or other temperature extremes.
  • Because its performance depends heavily on the material used to build it, choosing a low-conductivity construction material improves insulation significantly.
  • If a line only needs ordinary transport and not temperature preservation, a regular Gas Pipe is usually cheaper and simpler.
