Liquid Pipe Germ Sensor

Overview

The Liquid Pipe Germ Sensor is an automation building used to detect whether a liquid in a pipe contains germs. Like other germ sensors, it is meant to control automation behavior in the presence of germs, making it useful for sorting, filtering, quarantining, or recirculating liquids based on contamination status.

Its most important use is in pipe networks that handle liquids which may carry disease, especially when a system needs to divert contaminated water away from clean storage or processing. The sensor checks the liquid passing through the pipe and outputs a signal based on germ presence, allowing doors, shutoffs, or other automation devices to respond automatically.

A few details matter when using it effectively:

  • Liquids in pipes are not sterilized by surrounding Chlorine gas or radiation. If a pipe segment contains germs, placing the sensor on that segment and setting it to trigger below a low germ threshold will not cause those germs to disappear.
  • Because of this, a contaminated segment that is never recirculated will continue to register germs forever, and the sensor will keep sending a red signal. To make the system work properly, the liquid must be actively circulated through a setup that can actually remove the germs.
  • Contaminated water is not the same as polluted water. Contaminated water contains germs and may also be polluted, while polluted water is not necessarily contaminated.
  • The sensor can be melted down for 75 kg of Refined Metal, which effectively turns 50 kg of Plastic into 75 kg of Refined Metal.

In practice, the Liquid Pipe Germ Sensor is most useful as part of a closed-loop treatment system rather than as a simple detector on a dead-end pipe. If the pipe contents cannot change state because they are isolated from a sterilizing process, the sensor will only report the existing contamination. For that reason, it pairs best with recirculation loops, automated valve control, and treatment chains that actually remove germs before the liquid is sent onward.
