Liquid Shutoff

The Liquid Shutoff is an automation-enabled plumbing building that controls whether liquid can pass through a liquid pipe. When disabled, it blocks flow; when enabled, it allows liquid to continue through the line. It is used anywhere a colony needs a pipe segment to open and close automatically instead of relying on manual intervention.

Unlike the Liquid Valve, the Liquid Shutoff does not merge the liquid on its output tile. This makes it useful for preserving pipe layout and avoiding unwanted mixing behavior at the point where flow resumes. Because it responds to automation, it can be integrated into pressure, storage, temperature, or timing-based control systems without requiring a Duplicant to operate it.

Automated piping saves power and time by removing the need for Duplicant input, and the Liquid Shutoff is one of the basic parts used to build those systems. It is especially effective when paired with sensors or logic gates that decide when a fluid should move. A common setup uses a NOT Gate to keep the shutoff running continuously, which is useful when a line should remain open unless a specific condition is met.

Practical uses include:

• stopping a pipe from overfilling a machine or storage target
• routing liquid only when a sensor detects the correct temperature, pressure, or tank state
• isolating sections of plumbing during startup, shutdown, or repair
• preventing unwanted backflow patterns in automated liquid systems

Because it is a control component rather than a processing building, its value comes from precision. The Liquid Shutoff is best thought of as a binary gate for liquid flow: open when conditions are right, closed when they are not. This makes it a core part of more advanced plumbing networks, especially in bases that rely on automation to reduce labor and keep systems stable.
