Overview

The Gas Element Sensor is an automation building used to detect whether a chosen gas is present in the cell it is placed in. It is commonly paired with Gas Pumps and logic gates to turn gas handling systems on and off only when needed, reducing wasted power and preventing pumps from running in empty or irrelevant atmospheres.

A common use is to automate gas removal in rooms with changing gas compositions, such as a natural gas geyser setup where pumps only need to run during eruptions. It is also useful for cleanup tasks: a sensor set to detect Carbon Dioxide can help clear low-lying carbon dioxide from a chlorine disinfection room, while a sensor set to detect Hydrogen can be used at the bottom of a room to keep a pump running until all other gases have been removed.

  • With a NOT Gate, the sensor can invert its behavior and disable a pump when the chosen gas is present.
  • Placing the sensor at the bottom of a room makes it effective for detecting lighter gases above heavier unwanted gases, or for stopping cleanup once only the target gas remains.
  • The building is useful anywhere you want gas pumping to respond to atmospheric conditions instead of running continuously.
