Gas Pipe Element Sensor

Overview

The Gas Pipe Element Sensor is a utility building used to detect whether a specific gas is present in a gas pipe. It does not filter gases by itself; instead, it outputs a signal when the selected element is in the pipe, allowing automation to react to the pipe’s contents.

Its main use is in loop filters, where it is paired with a Gas Shutoff to sort gas streams. In that setup, the sensor checks the gas moving through the pipe and controls the shutoff so only the desired gas continues forward. This serves as an alternative to a Gas Filter while consuming far less power: 10 W for the sensor-and-shutoff arrangement compared with 120 W for a Gas Filter.

  • The sensor detects a specific gas inside a pipe and can be set to react only when that gas is present.
  • Combined with a Gas Shutoff, it can reproduce Gas Filter behavior in self-looping pipe systems.
  • The lower power cost makes it especially useful for large or permanent sorting setups, where the continuous energy use of a Gas Filter would be wasteful.
  • Because the sensor only provides detection, the actual separation still depends on automation and the shutoff; the pipe layout must be arranged so gas can be diverted correctly.

The building is most valuable when a colony needs efficient, automated gas sorting over long periods. A simple loop filter built from a Gas Pipe Element Sensor and a Gas Shutoff is a standard solution for separating gases with minimal ongoing power draw.
