Gas Vent

Overview

A Gas Vent is the endpoint of a ventilation system, allowing gas to leave piping and enter the surrounding environment. It is the final destination for a gas line and is used to deliver piped gases into a room, chamber, or other connected space.

A vent only checks the pressure in its own tile. It cannot release gas when the surrounding pressure at that tile is above 2000 g. Because of this, the vent’s output can be intermittent if the tile contains several gases at different pressures: when a low-pressure gas occupies the vent’s tile, it can release gas, but when a higher-pressure gas bubble drifts into that same tile, the vent may temporarily stop. If this becomes a problem, placing multiple vents close together gives the pipeline more opportunities to find a tile that is not overpressured.

Gas Vents can also be placed in a small amount of liquid to bypass the normal 2 kg pressure limit. This is treated as an exploit, because it lets a vent compress gas without a normal upper limit and store an effectively unlimited amount of gas in a limited area. To make it work, place the vent in a puddle at least two tiles wide, with less than 2 kg of liquid in the vent’s own tile and a similar amount beside it.

  • The amount of liquid in the vent’s tile matters: 2 kg or more will overpressure the vent.
  • The puddle must be wide enough for liquid to flow out of the way when gas is released.
  • If the liquid has nowhere to move, it is deleted instead and the exploit stops working.

In practical use, Gas Vents are most reliable when the destination tile is kept clear of pressure buildup. They are useful for controlled release into rooms, but they are sensitive to local conditions, so crowded gas mixtures and sealed spaces can reduce their effectiveness. Keeping vents spaced out, or ensuring there is room for the output gas to disperse, helps maintain steady flow.
