Overview

Critter Morphs are the variant forms within a critter species that can be selected, bred, or produced through the Critter Flux-O-Matic. Many species have a base morph and one or more alternate morphs, with the alternate forms often tied to the same breeding logic used for egg chances. The game treats morph selection as a weighted process: each critter has normalized breeding weights that are adjusted by modifiers and then re-normalized, so the current conditions of a critter directly affect which morphs it can produce or become.

The Critter Flux-O-Matic is the main building associated with Critter Morphs. When first discovered, it is inactive and must be manually activated by a duplicant. Before the story trait is completed, the machine is used for scanning: it must be fed species data from five different species, and only base morphs contribute to progression. Once five species have been scanned, the story trait is complete, granting a Keepsake reward and unlocking Gene Manipulation Mode. The machine is 3-by-4 cells in size, with the lower-left cell used for input and the lower-right cell for output.

In scanning mode, critters placed in the machine are held for 15 seconds and then returned. A critter of a species that has not yet contributed data advances the story trait; scanning additional critters of the same species still works, but does not add progression. The interface shows progress as a five-part circular indicator. In Gene Manipulation Mode, scanning works differently: variant morphs can still be scanned, but they are simply processed and returned with no effect. Scanning a base morph instead converts it into a random variant morph of its species, using only the morphs that the critter could currently lay as eggs, excluding the base morph itself. After a successful morph, the machine enters a 540-second cooldown.

The morphing rules differ by species, but the same general pattern applies: the current breeding weights determine what the critter can become. Examples include Hatch morphs into Stone Hatch and Sage Hatch, Pokeshell morphs into Oakshell and Sanishell, Shine Bug morphs into Sun Bug and higher forms, and several other species with similarly weighted alternate forms. Some morphs are limited by conditions such as food, nearby creatures, decor, pollination, or element exposure. These modifiers are checked at regular intervals, which means the environment can directly influence long-term morph outcomes.

A useful interaction is that Critter Drop-Offs can help move critters into the machine, and a Critter Pick-Up can be used to call otherwise non-wranglable critters toward it. Before update U51-595164, babies could not be auto-wrangled by the Critter Pick-Up or the older Critter Drop-Off behavior.

Other critter buildings interact with morphs indirectly. Critters in a Stable with access to a Critter Fountain will drink Brackene, gaining the Hydrated buff for 1 cycle; wild critters also use it, gaining a temporary happiness bonus without changing reproduction rate or metabolism. The Critter Fountain stores up to 80 kg of Brackene.
