Overview

Cavelings are hostile creatures that primarily spawn on Stone Moss placed in any biome. They are one of the enemies associated with the underground ecosystem and are notable for being able to interact with terrain rather than simply moving around it.

Cavelings can break Dirt, Turf, Sand, Meadow, Clay, Stone, and Dark Stone blocks, which makes them a poor choice for use in a farming habitat or any enclosure that relies on soft blocks to keep creatures contained. They also mine ore walls, but they leave the ore behind instead of destroying the resource itself. This makes them especially disruptive in areas where blocks are meant to stay intact, but less dangerous to ore deposits than their digging behavior first suggests.

Because of their block-breaking behavior, Cavelings are best handled with sturdy materials and careful placement of any structures or pens near Stone Moss. If you are trying to keep them in a controlled space, avoid using breakable ground types for the floor or boundaries. In practice, they are most relevant anywhere Stone Moss can be found or placed, since that is their main spawning condition.
