Caveling Spearman

Overview
The Caveling Spearman is a common enemy native to the Clay Caves. It often appears alongside Caveling Skirmishers and will attack any detected player, as well as Larva and Big Larva. Its main attack is a spear thrust, making it a direct melee threat that can quickly punish players who let it close the distance.
Caveling Spearmen primarily spawn on Clay Moss placed in any biome, so their presence is closely tied to that terrain rather than to a single fixed area. Because of this, any Clay Moss in or around the Clay Caves can contribute to their spread and make travel more dangerous.
In practice, Caveling Spearmen are about as fast as a player with no speed bonuses, which makes simple retreat difficult if you are already within their range. A Swift Feather makes evasion much easier by giving you the movement advantage needed to break away. If you prefer to fight from safety, a Slingshot is a strong choice, since it lets you keep your distance while still dealing solid damage. Their speed and melee reach make them much more dangerous in tight tunnels than in open spaces, so terrain matters a great deal when engaging them.
- Caveling Spearmen can drop a Hunting Spear on death. This is a very useful weapon against many enemies in the Clay Caves, including Spearmen themselves.
- Removing Clay Moss where possible reduces Caveling Spearman spawns, which can make the Clay Caves easier and safer to traverse.
- Since they attack both players and nearby cave creatures, they can become an active obstacle during fights between other enemies as well.
- Their mobility is close to an unbuffed player’s speed, so do not rely on simply walking away unless you have a movement boost or enough space to disengage.
Because they spawn on Clay Moss in any biome, players who are building, exploring, or reshaping terrain should keep an eye on where that block is placed. Clearing it out is one of the most direct ways to limit their numbers. When fighting them, maintaining range is usually the safest approach, while close combat is riskier unless you can reliably outdamage them before they connect with repeated spear strikes.
