Caveling Assassin

Overview
The Caveling Assassin is a common enemy native to the Desert of Beginnings. It is one of the more aggressive caveling variants, relying on quick, repeated attacks rather than sustained pressure, and it is encountered as part of the Desert of Beginnings enemy set.
Caveling Assassins attack in two distinct ways depending on distance. At range, they throw three daggers at the player in rapid succession. When the player is close, they switch to three lunging slashes instead. Between attack sequences, they pause for a few seconds, which creates a reliable opening to retaliate or reposition. This rhythm makes them dangerous in short bursts, but also predictable once engaged.
Caveling Assassins primarily spawn on Valley Moss placed in any biome. This means they can be introduced outside their native desert area if that terrain is used to encourage enemy spawning. Because of this, players should treat Valley Moss carefully when placing it in bases or controlled spaces, since it can lead to Assassin spawns even where they would not normally appear.
- Their ranged attack comes as three fast dagger throws, so sidestepping after the first throw is not always enough if the player remains exposed.
- In close quarters, they prefer a three-hit lunge pattern, making tight spaces more dangerous if the player is trying to face-tank them.
- The pause between attack cycles is the best time to strike, heal, or disengage.
- Since they can spawn from Valley Moss in any biome, terrain placement can affect where they appear, not just biome location.
In practice, the Caveling Assassin rewards patient movement and timing. Staying aware of distance is important: keeping space forces the dagger pattern, while closing in without committing to an opening can leave the player vulnerable to its slash sequence.
