Kelple

kelple
Type
Cattle
Official description

A marine reptile and natural gardener, that chews down on kelp when it grows too plenty. It doesn't need many nutrients, so whatever it eats comes out again in a condensed ball shape that is free for the taking.

Overview

Kelple is a cattle creature native to the Sunken Sea. It is a source of kelp-based food production rather than a combat or progression unit, and its main purpose is to convert kelp into Kelp Dumplings. Every 2 pieces of kelp fed to a Kelple produces 1 Kelp Dumpling, making it a simple way to turn harvested sea plants into cooked food.

Kelples can also be bred. When two Kelples are bred, they produce a Kelple Hatchling, allowing a player to establish a self-sustaining herd. This makes them useful for long-term food supply in bases built near the Sunken Sea or in livestock enclosures stocked with kelp.

Naturally spawned Kelples come in different colors, and breeding introduces a chance for color inheritance or mutation. When breeding, there is a 60% chance that the child inherits the color of one of its parents, and a 40% chance that it mutates into a random color. Natural spawns also appear in random colors, so collecting multiple individuals is the easiest way to expand a herd with different looks.

The known color distribution is uneven, with some variants appearing more often than others. In natural spawns, the common color appears most frequently, while rarer color variants have lower spawn chances. Breeding produces its own set of color probabilities as well, so repeatedly breeding Kelples can gradually shift the appearance of a herd even without finding new wild ones.

  • Kelples are native to the Sunken Sea.
  • They consume kelp and produce Kelp Dumplings at a rate of 1 dumpling per 2 kelp.
  • Two Kelples can be bred to create a Kelple Hatchling.
  • Wild Kelples spawn with random colors.
  • Breeding gives a 60% chance to inherit a parent’s color and a 40% chance to mutate to a random color.
  • Because they rely on kelp, keeping a steady supply of kelp is the key to efficient use.

Kelples are most valuable when placed close to a reliable kelp source, since their food conversion turns a common aquatic crop into a more immediately useful item. For players already gathering in the Sunken Sea, they provide an efficient livestock option with the added bonus of color variety.
