Island Map

Overview
The Island Map is the player’s primary navigation tool in Dinkum. It is received from Fletch on Day 1 along with the Base Tent Deed, immediately after the player leaves the airship and begins settling into the island. Fletch gives it so the player can find their way back to the dock if they get lost. The map is not a consumable item that must be used like a tool; instead, it functions as a built-in interface for viewing the island.
Each Island Map is randomly generated, so every save file has a different layout. The island is not infinite, but it is large enough that travel across it takes time, and the town and farm occupy only a small part of the available space. The player can build anywhere on the island. Climate still follows the map’s overall structure, so the north tends to be hot and the south is cooler. Biomes are fixed for each map and do not change if an area is terraformed.
The map shows the player’s current location and a wide range of important points of interest. These include player-placed pins, biomes, NPC buildings, vehicles, the player’s tent or house, guest houses, tele towers and tele pads, and quest markers from Bulletin Board tasks. Because the map also tracks a variety of town structures and landmarks, it is one of the most useful tools for planning travel and settlement placement.
Map controls are available on keyboard, mouse, and controller. On keyboard, the map is opened with M; on a controller, it is opened with D-pad Up. The map can be zoomed in and out, the cursor can be moved across it, and pins can be placed on hovered locations. Pins may be marked as waypoints, which makes them appear on the minimap, and they can also be unmarked or deleted as needed. The map can be closed from the same interface once navigation is complete.
The map icon system distinguishes many different landmark types, making it easier to identify important locations at a glance. These icons cover the player, placeable markers, town buildings, vehicles, and Bulletin Board quest markers. This makes the Island Map especially helpful once the island begins to develop and there are many destinations to keep track of.
- The Island Map is given automatically on Day 1 with the Base Tent.
- It opens with M on keyboard or D-pad Up on a controller.
- It displays the player, pins, biomes, buildings, vehicles, homes, guest houses, tele towers/pads, and quest markers.
- Each map is different, but biome placement follows the island’s climate pattern.
- The island has a finite size, though it is large enough to build in many places.
