Blank Canvas

Blank Canvas is a decorative building used to create paintings. Once researched and built, a Duplicant can work on it to produce one of several finished artworks, each with its own name, description, and decorative value. It is one of the main ways to turn resources and Duplicant labor into long-term Decor for a colony’s living and public spaces.

The finished painting comes in three quality tiers. Crude paintings grant +5 base Decor, Quaint paintings grant +10, and Masterpiece paintings grant +15. The quality depends on the artist creating it, with higher-skill Duplicants capable of producing better results. Most of the known paintings are Masterpieces, while only a few are Crude or Quaint.

Blank Canvas also interacts with the material used to build it. Reed Fiber, which is required for construction, provides a +10% Decor bonus to the painting’s total Decor. Using Gold Amalgam or Copper Ore adds another +10%. Niobium gives a much larger +50% bonus, but it is generally not practical because of how rare it is.

Because the finished work can be placed in highly trafficked rooms, Blank Canvas is especially useful for raising Decor without needing complex infrastructure. The choice of construction material matters, since the bonus applies to the final artwork and can make a significant difference in high-value rooms such as dining areas, bedrooms, and recreation spaces. If Niobium is available, it produces the strongest result, but Gold Amalgam and Copper Ore are the common practical choices.

Historically, parts of Great Monument were unlocked by the same research before the research tree was changed in the Mergedown update. That content now appears as a standalone research path.
