Grubfruit

Grubfruit is a farm-grown food crop associated with Grubfruit Plants and the sulfur-based ranching chain built around Sweetles and Grubgrubs. It is a mid-game ingredient rather than a finished meal on its own, but it becomes especially valuable once colonies can support a steady supply of sulfur for both ranching and cooking.

Its main food use is as an ingredient in two recipes: the Electric Grill can turn 2000 kcal of Grubfruit and 4 kg of Sucrose into 2400 kcal of Grubfruit Preserve, while the Gas Range can combine 1000 kcal of Grubfruit, 3 units of Sleet Wheat Grain, and 2000 kcal of Gristle Berry into 4200 kcal of Mixed Berry Pie. Because of that, Grubfruit is most useful when a colony is already producing either Sucrose or a variety of crop ingredients and wants to convert farm output into longer-lasting or higher-value meals.

Grubfruit production is closely tied to Grubgrubs. Grubgrubs work best when paired with plants, because they rub crops to speed up growth. They can be left unfed until they starve, or they can be kept alive by feeding them roughly once every 10 days. For colony planning, Grubgrubs need more room than Sweetles, so the ranch layout matters: a max-size ranch can hold 6 Grubgrubs or 8 Sweetles without overcrowding. If the goal is to maximize overall food output from sulfur, some ranch setups keep only a few Grubfruit Plants per ranch so Sweetles continue laying eggs more reliably, while still letting Grubgrubs support plant growth and meat production.

Grubfruit also fits into the broader sulfur economy. To keep Sweetles, Grubgrubs, and Grubfruit Plants running long term, a stable sulfur source is needed, and a Sulfur Geyser tamer is the recommended solution. That sulfur can be converted into Sucrose by Sweetles and then fed to Grubgrubs for Mud production, or used directly in ranches centered on Grubfruit Plants. One practical note is that Grubgrubs convert Sucrose into Mud much more efficiently than Sulfur, so sulfur often goes farther when processed through Sweetles first before being fed onward.

In short, Grubfruit is a key crop for colonies that want to build around sulfur ranching rather than conventional farming. It supports long-term food production, enables Grubfruit Preserve and Mixed Berry Pie, and becomes most efficient when paired with carefully managed Sweetles, Grubgrubs, and plant ranches.
