Axes

Axes are a core early-game tool used to fell trees, stumps, and mangroves, to harvest seeds and other plant drops, and to open old barrels and wheelie bins for loot. They can also be used as a weapon, dealing a small amount of damage in melee. As the tool is upgraded, it gains the ability to chop harder wood types, with higher durability and damage.

The basic axe is the first version most players will use. It can chop Gum Trees for Gum Logs and Gum Nuts, Bottle Trees for Bottle Tree Wood Logs, Palm Trees for Palm Wood Logs and Palm Tree Seeds, Mangrove Trees for Mangrove Sticks, and Fruit Trees for fruit. It can also harvest Yellow Wattle Bushes and Bottle Brush Bushes for a chance at their seeds, Grass Trees for Spinifex Tuft and sometimes a Grass Tree Seed Pod, and even Lilly Pilly and Small Lilly Pilly for their seeds. In some cases it can also yield Hard Wood Logs from Jacaranda Trees and Coral Acacia Trees, though this behavior is noted as unusual.

Copper axes can chop everything the basic axe can, and also Blackwood Trees for Hard Wood Logs and Blackwood Seeds. They can still cut Jacaranda and Coral Acacia for Hard Wood Logs, with Coral Acacia also yielding a Coral Acacia Seed. Iron axes are the most capable standard axe, and can chop all trees.

Axes are tied to the Logging Licence. The level 1 Logging Licence allows the player to buy axes and chop down trees, while higher licence levels unlock the ability to craft better axes. The basic axe is sold at John’s Goods, and the game also notes that Basic Axe and Copper Axe can appear as loot from the Gacha Machine. Candy axes are another variant and have the same durability as the Copper Axe, while chopping the same trees as the Copper Axe.

• Axe durability can be repaired at the Repair Table.
• Upgrading an axe at the Crafting Table increases durability and damage, and allows it to break harder logs.
• Logging Licence level 1 is required to buy the Basic Axe.
• Higher Logging Licence levels unlock better axe crafting recipes.
• Axes are useful both for resource gathering and for clearing obstacles around a settlement or farm.
