Overview

Corvette is the first space combat ship that can be unlocked in Dyson Sphere Program. It is a fighter-class combat unit used in space battles against the Dark Fog, and it becomes an important weapon when attacking Dark Fog Hives, where enemy numbers are large enough that simple, small-scale defense is not enough.

Although it is the earliest available space combat vessel, its research requires Information Matrix, so it usually cannot be produced until the late game. By the time it becomes available, the Hives in the starting star system are often already in an advanced growth stage, making an early decisive assault unrealistic. Corvette can technically destroy a Hive on its own, but doing so before drone-related upgrades are fully complete may require more than 1,000 Corvettes, which is not practical.

Corvettes are valuable because they do not use complex or rare materials, so they can be mass-produced in the midgame and late game. This makes them especially useful against established Hives that field thousands of units. Large squadrons also absorb enemy fire, greatly reducing the danger to Icarus and making space combat safer overall. In addition, if spare Corvettes are placed in the Hangar section of Icarus's Mecha Panel, they can replace destroyed units during battle. Deploying Corvettes in space consumes Icarus's energy even when Icarus is not directly fighting, so energy planning is important.

A major use for Corvette is offensive harassment of Planetary Base Relay Stations. Attacking Relay Stations with ground turrets provokes ground units regardless of distance, but attacks from Corvettes do not trigger any direct retaliation. If all Relay Stations are destroyed and the base is cut off from energy, a Planetary Base can then be dismantled with minimal force. For this purpose, even a single manually produced Corvette is enough if you are willing to take the time, since it takes no damage while destroying the stations.

Corvette is also useful for fighting the Dark Fog itself, but it has some limitations:

  • There is no automatic launch system for space combat ships from structures, so Icarus must travel out and deploy them manually.
  • For defending against raids, Plasma Turret is often more efficient because it is automated.
  • Farming the Dark Fog can supply the materials needed for Corvette production: Processors at Lv. 9+, Titanium Alloy at Lv. 12+, and Particle Containers and Reinforced Thrusters at Lv. 15+.
  • Destroyers have much higher stats, but they are far more expensive and limited in deployment, while Corvettes can be produced in large numbers and used as expendable swarm units.

Because of these traits, Corvette is most effective as a mass-produced late-game space fighter: cheap enough to replace, numerous enough to overwhelm, and flexible enough to support both Hive assaults and targeted disruption of Planetary Base defenses.
