Wash Basin

Overview

A Wash Basin is a hygiene building used to reduce germ spread by making Duplicants clean their hands before moving on from dirty areas. Its value comes from placement: when it is built where Duplicants are likely to get dirty, it helps slow the transmission of germs through the base and keeps contaminated traffic from carrying disease farther than necessary.

Because its effect depends on where Duplicants pass through, the Wash Basin is best treated as a control point rather than a decoration or a general-purpose facility. Putting one near places associated with mess or contamination reduces the chance that dirt and germs are spread to cleaner parts of the colony. In practice, it works as part of a simple sanitation chain: Duplicants get dirty in one area, pass through the Wash Basin, and then continue their route with less risk of spreading germs elsewhere.

A few practical points follow from this behavior:

  • Place Wash Basins at exits from areas where Duplicants commonly become dirty.
  • Use them to intercept traffic before it reaches cleaner, high-use sections of the colony.
  • The building is most effective when Duplicants are naturally funneled past it, since the germ reduction comes from routine use rather than from passive area coverage.
  • Its purpose is preventive: it does not remove the source of contamination, but it helps limit how far that contamination travels.

Overall, the Wash Basin is a straightforward utility building for managing colony hygiene. It is most useful early on whenever Duplicants are moving between dirty work sites and clean living areas, since a well-placed basin can noticeably reduce germ spread without requiring more advanced systems.
