Buddy Bud

Buddy Bud is a decorative plant that can also be used as a germ barrier. It has a decor value of 15 with a 2-tile radius while growing, but a stopped-growing Buddy Bud applies a -20 decor penalty with a 4-tile radius. Because it is a plant, it is most useful in places where its presence can improve room decor while also helping manage contamination.

Its special utility comes from the fact that two types of germs cannot occupy the same space at once. A strategically placed Buddy Bud can therefore block the spread of Slimelung through an area, and it can also be used to stop Zombie Spores. This makes it useful near Oxygen Diffusers and Algae Terrariums, especially if Duplicants are bringing contaminated algae into the base. In practice, Buddy Bud is a simple way to create a biological barrier without needing machinery.

There are, however, important limits to its usefulness:

• Buddy Bud only works against contamination involving carbon dioxide; it does not prevent Crude Oil from being polluted.
• It wilts rapidly in the heat of the Oil Biome, so it is not a reliable solution in hot industrial or late-game areas.
• Once it stops growing, it becomes a decor liability rather than a benefit, so keeping it healthy matters if it is being used for room aesthetics.

For base design, Buddy Bud is best treated as a low-tech support plant rather than a primary defense. It is most effective when placed where it can intercept germs before they reach living quarters or food-production areas. Because its area of effect is modest, it works best in corridors, around early oxygen production, or as a small decorative accent in cleaner sections of the base. If the plant is allowed to stop growing, its negative decor can make it worse than leaving the tile empty, so it should be placed only where conditions will keep it active.
