Overview

The Payload Source is a development-stage block that provides a universal spawn interface for in-game objects. Discovered in the Mindustry development preview materials distributed via the Mindustry Discord server, the block appears alongside a counterpart known as the Payload Void. The Payload Source exposes a dropdown menu of configurable payloads that can instantiate game entities directly; this interface includes every block and unit present in the build it was shown in, enabling the creation of almost any in-game object on demand.

The development preview demonstration revealed that the dropdown contains a number of unused or prototype entries alongside normal game content. Among these were several blocks not present in the main game build, including a retextured Launch Pad pod; these entries indicate the Payload Source can reference assets that are present in the client or development data even if they are not enabled in the release. Because the Payload Source's configuration list includes every block and unit available to it, it has the largest number of configurable payloads of any block recorded in that preview.

Practical notes and behavior observed in the preview:

  • The Payload Source uses a dropdown-based configuration to select which payload to produce. The list is comprehensive and includes both standard game entities and unused or prototype assets found in the development data.
  • The block can spawn both structures (blocks) and mobile entities (units), allowing it to place buildings or create units through its configuration.
  • A companion block, Payload Void, appears alongside the Payload Source in the same preview materials and is presented as part of the same payload workflow; their combined presence suggests a paired mechanism for creating and removing payloads during testing.
  • The existence of unused entries such as the retextured Launch Pad pod demonstrates that the Payload Source can access items that are not necessarily part of the public release, making it useful for previewing or iterating on content that remains disabled elsewhere.

Because the Payload Source was shown in development preview channels, its availability and exact behavior may differ between development builds and release versions. The preview demonstrates it primarily as a tool for spawning and testing entities by selecting from an extensive, development-internal list of payloads.
