Overview

The Payload Void is a payload-manipulation block introduced in Build 128 of the Version 7.0 pre-alpha, added alongside the Payload Source. It belongs to the family of general payload blocks and specializes in breaking down incoming payloads and returning their component resources rather than preserving the payload as a block or unit.

Functionally, the Payload Void deconstructs payloads and outputs 100% of their item cost. It is listed among other payload-oriented structures such as payload movers, sorters, mass drivers, and Deconstructors; compared to the Deconstructor and its improved variant, the Payload Void specifically acts to nullify the payload while refunding its material cost in full. The block is intended for reclaiming resources from payloads that are no longer wanted or that must be recycled efficiently.

Payload capacity rules apply to interactions with this block: blocks (including the Payload Void) can only carry a single payload at a time and will only accept payloads that are equal to or smaller than their payload capacity. Units have separate payload capacities and can carry multiple payloads up to their capacity limits; unit payload behavior is governed by the same size/space constraints used elsewhere. On maps or planets where the only practical payloads are unit payloads, general payload blocks will primarily interact with units rather than block payloads.

Practical notes and usage considerations:

  • Use the Payload Void to recover all item costs from unwanted block payloads or to recycle payloads returned from units and transport systems.
  • Because it refunds 100% of item cost, the Payload Void is efficient for resource recovery and can simplify supply chains where certain constructs are temporary.
  • Remember that blocks accept only one payload at a time and must meet the block’s payload capacity; plan placement accordingly to avoid bottlenecks.
  • The block complements other payload infrastructure such as Payload Mass Drivers (for long-range transfer), payload sorters, and Deconstructors (which deconstruct payloads but at different rates or capacities).
  • The Payload Void was released with the Payload Source; consider pairing these blocks when designing automated supply or recycling loops introduced in the same update.
