Farm Tile

Overview

Farm Tile is a basic agricultural building used to grow plants in a compact, floor-mounted format. Like a Planter Box, it lets Duplicants deliver fertilizer and liquids to a planted crop, which speeds up plant growth. It is especially useful when you want a farm that behaves like a normal tile layout rather than a raised planter.

Farm Tile is most commonly used with Mealwood, Dusk Cap, Balm Lily, Dasha Saltvine, and Wheezewort. It can also support other farmable plants in the same general way as a Planter Box, making it a flexible choice for early and mid-game food and utility farms. Because it is a tile, it fits neatly into room layouts and inline farms without requiring the space and shape of a full planter structure.

A few practical traits make Farm Tile distinct from other farming options:

  • Duplicants can plant seeds and deliver fertilizer from the back side of the tile, so access does not need to be directly in front of the crop.
  • Unlike Hydroponic Farm and Planter Box, Farm Tile has no decor penalty, which makes it better for farms placed in living or high-traffic areas.
  • Unlike regular floor tiles, it does not provide a runspeed bonus.
  • If you need airflow or liquid flow through a farmed area while keeping the footprint compact, a common approach is to use Airflow Tile or Mesh Tile with Planter Boxes in the remaining spaces, rather than relying only on Farm Tile.
  • It is effectively the tile version of a planter, so most planter-oriented farming advice applies here as well.

Farm Tile is also relevant to achievements and colony planning. Planting any seed into a Farm Tile will disable the Locavore Achievement for the current colony, but merely constructing the tile does not. This means it is safe to build Farm Tile early if you are still aiming for that achievement, as long as no seed is actually planted in it.

One additional interaction to keep in mind is that Pip and similar seed-planting behavior can create unintended crops in Farm Tile just as they can in other farm tiles. If that happens, the plant still counts as artificially cultivated and will require fertilizer and irrigation as normal. This makes seed control important if you are trying to avoid accidental plantings or preserve achievement conditions.

Overall, Farm Tile is a clean, low-penalty farming block that works well whenever you want the growth benefits of supplied farming in a compact, tile-based layout.
