Overview

Glurch the Abominous Mass is an early-game boss found in the Undergrounds and is intended to be the first boss most players defeat. It appears in a slime-covered arena roughly 65 to 100 tiles from The Core, and the area is usually easy to identify by the orange slime coating the ground, the nearby waypoint, and the loud thumping sound that grows stronger as you approach. When Glurch is nearby, the screen also begins to shake.

The boss arena contains both Glurch itself and the summoning rune used to respawn it later. After Glurch has been defeated, it can be summoned again by placing a Giant Slime Summoning Idol on that rune, which is located below the original spawn point.

Glurch’s battlefield is hazardous even before the fight begins. The ground is covered in slime that severely reduces movement speed, so clearing the area beforehand makes the encounter much easier. A hoe or shovel can be used to dig up the Ground Slime and preserve mobility. For a more specialized advantage, Yellow Blister Head fish can be cooked for 10 minutes of immunity to slime slow-downs, and Rain Armor reduces the movement penalty from Ground Slime by 50%.

Glurch’s behavior changes based on distance and health. At full health, it only begins attacking players within a 6 tile radius. Once damaged, this aggro range expands to 20 tiles. It attacks by leaping quickly toward the closest player, dealing damage where it lands and leaving a patch of Ground Slime behind. Any non-indestructible objects in its path are destroyed instantly, including walls, and pits or liquids are filled in with Dirt Block ground. If players move out of range during the fight, or if Glurch travels more than 25 tiles from its rune, it returns to the rune and regenerates health at 10% of its maximum every 5 seconds. At 30% health, it becomes enraged and moves much faster.

Several simple tactics make the fight far more manageable:

  • Bombs and ranged weapons, such as the Slingshot, are very effective against Glurch.
  • When using Bombs, place one and run out of Glurch’s range so it bounces into the Bomb and triggers it; repeating this can defeat the boss with about 10 to 20 Bombs on average.
  • Copper Spike Traps placed around the rune can deal steady passive damage as Glurch leaps through them.
  • Copper Armor offers basic protection, while Rain Armor is especially useful because it also mitigates slime slow-down.
  • The Swift Feather helps with dodging its jumps.
  • Cooked Bomb Pepper and Heart Berry provide movement speed, healing, and a temporary max health boost, which is useful for the fight.

Defeating Glurch drops the Glurch Eye, which is required for progression.
