Ghorm the Devourer

Overview
Ghorm the Devourer is an early-game boss found roaming the Clay Caves and Forgotten Ruins in a large circular route around The Core. It can be tracked with the Ghorm the Devourer Scanner, which follows its movement until it is defeated. Defeating Ghorm is required for progression because it drops Ghorm's Horn, an item used at the Ghorm Statue near The Core.
Ghorm normally travels at a distance of roughly 190–230 tiles from The Core, depending on the source route description, and it leaves a broad trail of destruction behind it. Anything in its path is instantly destroyed, including walls and most objects, and it can even break Obsidian Blocks. Normal enemies are killed on contact, and it deals very high damage when it hits the player. It also fills pits and liquids with Dirt Block ground and leaves Ground Slime behind, which slows movement.
The boss does not actively engage the player until it reaches 80% health. At that point it enters its second phase, where it circles around the player and attempts to damage them directly. If lured too far from the point where combat began, Ghorm returns to its route and begins regenerating health at 2% of its maximum every 5 seconds, so the fight should be kept near the original encounter area.
Ghorm’s health is 4030 / 8061 / 12092 on Casual, Standard, and Hard, respectively, with damage of 39–47 / 78–94 / 155–189.
A safe arena is usually just an emptied stretch beside part of Ghorm’s path, with any valuable structures kept well away from the fight. Because of how destructive Ghorm becomes in its active phase, it is best not to fight it near anything worth preserving.
Useful approaches include:
- Bronze armor is a solid general choice, and Ranger armor is especially helpful because its projectile bonus lets shots pierce multiple segments.
- Chieftain armor is a strong progression option for summoning builds, and Apprentice armor is a good magic choice.
- Bombs are cheap and effective, and they detonate immediately when Ghorm runs over them.
- Around 50–150 Spike Traps can kill Ghorm quickly if placed along its route; Wooden Spike Traps work as a cheaper alternative, but many more are needed. Traps are consumed permanently when used this way.
- A hoe, ideally Tin or Iron, can clear Ground Slime quickly.
- The Larva Ring and Grub Egg Necklace cancel the movement slowdown from Ground Slime, and a full set of Rain armor can serve as another way to handle it.
- Yellow Blister Head food also allows normal movement on Ground Slime for 10 minutes.
Ghorm destroys ore boulders, but they do not drop ore, and walls or objects destroyed by Ghorm do not drop as items. Its chest drops standard boss rewards, including Ghorm's Horn and other loot.
