The Hive Mother

Overview
The Hive Mother is an optional early-game boss found within the Larva Hive, roughly 330 tiles from The Core at the center of an extra large hive. A Hive Mother Scanner can reveal her location on the map, and after she has been defeated she can be summoned again by placing a Hive Mother Summoning Idol on the rune below her original spawn point. The Haunted Hive Mother is a special Halloween-exclusive variant that uses a Haunted Hive Mother Summoning Idol on the same rune.
In combat, the Hive Mother attacks by spitting acid every 4–5 seconds, or every 2–2.5 seconds once enraged at 60% health. The acid falls from the sky, deals moderate impact damage, and leaves behind Ground Acid Slime that deals 12 acid damage per second to anything standing in it. She also spawns Larva Hive Eggs at one of five fixed arena locations every 17–10 seconds depending on her remaining health. In multiplayer, she spawns additional eggs when there are at least 3 players in the world, and again when there are at least 6. If left alive, each egg hatches after 7.4 seconds into a Big Hive Larva and one of the following groups: 6–7 Hive Larvae, 2 Big Hive Larvae, or 3 Acid Larvae.
The larvae summoned from the eggs behave differently from normal versions of the enemies. They have a larger aggro range, can detect players outside line of sight, and do not drop loot. Hive Larvae have more health and damage than normal, Big Hive Larvae can break almost any walls or objects in their path, and Acid Larvae deal much heavier explosive damage.
Preparation for the fight matters because the arena quickly fills with enemies and slime. Clearing excess larva and veins around the boss before engaging makes movement easier, and both ranged and melee weapons are useful. Foods made with Yellow Blister Head Fish help reduce slowness from floor slime, while foods made with Green Blister Head Fish prevent acid damage. Wooden Spike Traps or Spike Traps can reduce pressure from spawned larvae, though the Ground Acid Slime still remains dangerous even when covered by traps.
During the fight, an Iron Hoe is useful for clearing acid patches before they control too much of the arena. Ranged weapons are strong while avoiding larvae, but melee can be safer when the spawned enemies are under control. Many players use a platform setup by digging into the arena walls to create a raised position surrounded by pits, which helps keep larvae from reaching them; however, the arena floor itself cannot be dug up, so the platform must be built slightly farther out. A damaging pet can also help by attacking the Hive Mother while the player handles larvae, or by clearing the larvae so ranged attacks can keep hitting the boss.
Defeating the Hive Mother can reward useful early-game loot, including the Hivebone armor and the Rift Lens. Repeating the fight through the summoning idol is also an efficient way to train Vitality, Melee combat, Range combat, Magic, and Summoning early in the game. Prior to 1.0, the Hive Mother was required for progression and had her own statue next to The Core instead of Malugaz the Corrupted.
