Vein Utilization

Overview

Veins utilization is a repeatable research technology that improves resource extraction across the game. Each level increases mining speed by 10%, reduces vein consumption by 6% relative to the current value, and increases Dark Fog drop items by 4%. The technology can be researched indefinitely, and its cost rises with each level.

The bonuses apply not only to veins, but to all gathering structures affected by extraction mechanics: Mining Machine, Oil Extractor, Water Pump, and Orbital Collector. The vein consumption reduction also applies to Crude Oil extraction, including the slower output rate that occurs as an oil field depletes. When oil extractors or water pumps are pushed to very high production rates, their output is delivered in accumulated batches.

At early levels, the speed bonus is easy to notice, but the vein-consumption bonus is the more important long-term effect. The researched consumption value compounds each time, so the total reduction grows quickly: level 1 leaves vein consumption at 94.00%, level 2 at 88.36%, level 3 at 83.06%, level 4 at 78.07%, and level 5 at 73.39%. The total mining speed bonus reaches 150% at level 5, which is the highest explicitly listed tier in the available tables.

For practical use, this technology is one of the most broadly useful upgrades in the game because it scales every major extraction chain at once. It is especially valuable when expansion starts to strain nearby resource patches, since it both increases throughput and slows depletion. It also improves drop yield from Dark Fog combat, giving the research a second source of value beyond mining.

  • The research is unlocked after Electromagnetism.
  • Level 1 costs 400 Universe Matrix.
  • Level 2 costs 1,000 Universe Matrix.
  • Level 3 costs 1,000 Universe Matrix.
  • Level 4 costs 1,600 Universe Matrix.
  • Level 5 costs 2,000 Universe Matrix.
  • Later levels continue indefinitely, with the cost increasing by a linear amount based on level.

The balance between faster extraction and slower depletion changes over time. On Mining Machine outputs, the increased mining speed eventually shortens the practical lifespan of a deposit at low levels, but higher levels reverse that trend as the reduced vein consumption dominates. In other words, continuing the research is what keeps the total extracted resource count growing faster than the rate of depletion.
