Overview

Pause is a building state that halts progress and activity for a construction site or completed building. When a construction is set to Pause it stops workers from continuing work and causes certain automated behaviors to suspend until the Pause is removed. Pause is used to control labor allocation, prioritize projects, and prevent specific facilities from being used without demolishing or disassembling them.

Pause affects a range of construction types and behaviors. All incomplete construction sites are paused and receive no further work while in Pause. Paused production buildings and service buildings do not perform their normal operations; this includes facilities that consume or produce resources. Paused housing will be vacated and will not accept new residents while paused. Paused storage and resource buildings stop normal interactions that would otherwise route goods through them, though haulers may still empty paused constructions of unused resources, both inputs and outputs. Paused decorations and nonfunctional constructions likewise remain inert.

Practical notes and usage:

  • Use Pause to stop workers building an item temporarily so labor can be redirected to higher-priority projects without demolishing the site.
  • Pause is useful for preventing a building from operating (for example, to stop a production chain) without destroying the structure or removing its stored resources.
  • Paused housing forces loggers/haulers to relocate inhabitants; ensure alternative housing exists to avoid overcrowding or population loss.
  • Paused storage will not participate in normal resource routing; plan storage placement and pause state carefully to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Haulers can still remove unused items from paused constructions; use this behavior to clear inputs or outputs before reactivating a building.
  • Remember to unpause constructions when you want normal activity to resume; paused projects do not automatically restart.
