Fishing Rod

The Fishing Rod is the basic tool used to catch fish in Dinkum. After obtaining Fishing Licence Level 1 from Fletch, it can be purchased from John’s Goods, and it may also appear as possible loot from the Gacha Machine. Like other tools, its durability can be restored at the Repair Table.

To use a Fishing Rod, it must be placed in a toolbelt slot. While standing near water, hold the left mouse button to charge a cast; the longer it is held, the farther the line will travel. When a fish is near the bobber, it will begin to nibble. After several nibbles, the fish will bite and the bobber will dip below the surface, accompanied by a louder thunk sound. At that moment, quickly press the left mouse button to set the hook.

Once a fish is hooked, it will struggle against the line. While it is splashing, do not reel it in; trying to do so can cause the line to break. When the fish stops struggling, hold the left mouse button again to reel it closer. This may need to be repeated several times, depending on the fish’s distance and the quality of the rod. When the fish is fully reeled in, it is caught and added to the player’s inventory unless the inventory is full.

The Fishing Rod can catch all types of fish except sharks. It has low line durability and breaks more easily than sturdier tools, so timing matters. Stamina use while fishing is affected by both the player’s skill level and the quality of the rod, with the maximum stamina benefit reached at Fishing level 75. A better fishing rod also helps fish be reeled in faster, and using a better tool does not require a higher licence level.

Useful notes:

• Watch for the bobber to sink fully or listen for the thunk to know when to strike.
• If a fish is splashing, wait before reeling or the line may snap.
• The camera can be rotated to track fish more easily while they move.
• Jelly Brew and Fish and Chips provide fishing buffs.
• The Fish Book is useful for finding specific fish and discovering new ones.
• Caught fish can be donated to the Museum Deed, sold, gifted to NPCs, displayed in a Fish Tank, or cooked on a campfire or BBQ.
