Overview

The Oxynoe is a tier-2 naval support unit that appears in Mindustry as a fast, flame-using vessel which buffs allied naval forces while dealing high close-range damage. It mounts dual plasma flamethrowers that both damage and repair enemy structures it touches, plus a point-defense turret that targets incoming projectiles. The unit was added in Build 127 and is named after the Oxynoe genus of sea snails.

Oxynoe's primary offensive armament consists of two plasma flamethrower mounts with a combined firing cadence of 2 × 6 shots per second, 23 damage per hit, 10° inaccuracy, pierce, and a short Burning application of about 4 seconds. Each flamethrower also repairs structures by 1.5% per hit (value increased in Build 129). The secondary weapon is a point-defense mount that fires at 6.66 shots/sec dealing 15–17 damage to projectiles (the point-defense damage was raised to 17 in Build 132) and negates incoming enemy projectiles. Oxynoe's item capacity was reduced from 60 to 50 in Build 130; its movement speed displays as 6.22 tiles/sec (converted in Build 128).

Uniquely among units, Oxynoe has a Status Field ability added in Build 130.1: the field fires at 0.16/sec, reaches about 7–7.5 blocks, and its overclock effect lasts approximately 6 seconds. The unit’s status field buffs nearby allied naval units, increasing their damage and speed; careful positioning is required because Oxynoes will try to stay within range of units they buff and can outpace slower allies unless microed or controlled with logic. The unit originally had a shorter range in earlier builds and had its range adjusted multiple times (reduced to ~7 blocks in Build 132, later increased to 12 in Build 136, with minor version variations).

Behavioral and interaction notes:

  • Oxynoe flamethrowers target ground/enemy structures only; despite a Core Database entry claiming air targeting, the flamethrowers do not hit air units.
  • Flames reflected by Phase Wall, Large Phase Wall, Shielded Wall, or similar reflectors instantly heal the block that is hit, effectively nullifying the Oxynoe’s damage and repairing defenses. This makes phase-based defenses especially effective against Oxynoe-led naval strikes.
  • Oxynoe is not immune to the Burning status effect even though it uses burning weapons.
  • Its point-defense can intercept and neutralize many long-range projectiles, but some direct damage weapons (Fuses, Lancers) bypass point defense and threaten the Oxynoe directly.
  • Oxynoe was previously associated with a status field mechanic present on the Minke in earlier versions.

Practical tactics and counters:

  • Against Oxynoe: Keep your Core and high-value structures out of close proximity to water paths where Oxynoes can reach them. Long-range turrets (e.g., Ripple) can chip at Oxynoes, though their projectiles may be intercepted by the Oxynoe’s point defense. Use units or weapons that bypass or overwhelm point defense (Fuses, Lancers, Meltdowns, Spectres) to destroy Oxynoes quickly. Phase walls or shielded walls placed to reflect their flames will not only stop their damage but will heal your structures when the flame is reflected.
  • With Oxynoe: Pair Oxynoes with other naval factories to alternate production between offensive and support naval units; Oxynoes buff nearby Omura/Sei/other naval units and dramatically increase fleet DPS when properly microed. Use logic processors to keep Oxynoes from outrunning slower allied ships, or micro them manually by selecting Oxynoes and moving them next to the squad to maintain Overclock uptime. In single-player, frequent pausing helps if you cannot micro them quickly enough.
  • Other notes: Oxynoe appears as a playable character in the Animdustry mod, where an alternating adjacency-destroying ability mirrors its alternating status-field behaviour.
