Overview

Irrigation Barrier is a structure used to block irrigation and thereby control which tiles receive fresh water in order to create or preserve irrigated land for Crops, Trees, or Bushes that require irrigation to survive. Placing an Irrigation Barrier forms a solid boundary that prevents water from flowing across it; terrain on the side of the barrier that is kept supplied with fresh water remains irrigated and supports irrigation-dependent plants.

Irrigation Barriers rely on a consistent fresh water supply behind them to maintain irrigated terrain. The barrier itself does not generate water; it only prevents water from reaching the other side. When using barriers to manage farmland or forested areas, ensure a reliable source of fresh water on the irrigated side so soil stays in the irrigated state and plants continue to grow.

Alternative ways to create and manage irrigated land include constructing channels fed by Valves configured to block badwater, or using irrigation pools supplied by Fluid Dumps. Channels and pools can provide controlled water flow and storage that serve the same purpose as barriers in shaping which tiles become or remain irrigated.

Practical notes and behavior:

  • Use barriers to isolate an irrigated area from surrounding badwater or to protect crops and trees from being flooded by unwanted flows.
  • Always maintain a fresh water source behind the barrier; without a supply of fresh water the protected tiles will not remain irrigated.
  • Channels with Valves and irrigation pools with Fluid Dumps are viable alternatives or complements to barriers for managing irrigation and preventing contamination by badwater.
  • Irrigation Barriers were introduced in Update 5 of the game.
  • In Update 7 the visual appearance of barriers was improved to use a connected texture, and barriers no longer block relevant ground effects when placed in a diagonal line.

Irrigation Barriers are categorized as Structures and are used as part of broader water-management strategies in settlements that cultivate irrigation-dependent vegetation. Use them in concert with water-routing buildings and storage to reliably support crops, trees, and bushes that require irrigated ground.
