Overview

Spiral Stairs are a compact stairwell design in Timberborn that allows beavers to access multiple stories within a building footprint efficiently. The design is typically implemented on a 2x2 footprint and is valued for its verticality and small material cost compared with larger stair arrangements. The common implementations use either stacked platforms or overhang pieces to form a twisting ascent that fits into a tight area and reaches high elevations quickly.

The most common and fastest-to-build variant uses platforms. Construction begins with two single Platform placed in opposite corners at the base. Above these, stacked Double Platforms continue the spiral as high as required, creating a continuous helical path. If an intermediate exit is needed partway up the staircase, the pattern must be altered to include overhangs or breaks in the spiral, which complicates the build and can slow construction.

An alternative uses the Overhang 2x1 pieces to form the turn in the spiral. This Overhang-based 2x2 spiral produces a similar visual effect but requires more materials and takes longer to build than the platform method. Both variants appear in community galleries and artwork, demonstrating the compact footprint and functional utility of spiral stairs in tall constructions.

Spiral Stairs were present from Version 1 of the game. Community galleries and strategy guides frequently show two visual styles: the platform spiral and the overhang spiral, and both are used when players need a narrow, vertical circulation solution within a dense settlement.

  • The platform-based 2x2 spiral is the most compact and fastest-to-build method for gaining height; start with two single Platforms in opposite corners, then stack Double Platforms upward.
  • To create an intermediate exit from the spiral, incorporate overhangs or interrupt the regular platform pattern; this increases complexity and build time.
  • The Overhang 2x1 2x2 spiral is a valid alternative but uses more materials and builds slower than the platform variant.
  • Spiral stairs are commonly used where space is limited and quick vertical access is required, such as lookout towers, grain silos, or compact multi-level workshops.
  • Community galleries show example layouts and artwork for both the platform spiral and the overhang spiral, useful for visual reference.

A few trivia notes connected to the concept of spiral staircases include historical mentions outside the game: the oldest known spiral staircase dates to 5378 BC and was discovered in China, and spiral stairs are referenced in the Old Testament description of Solomon’s Temple. These cultural and historical points highlight the long-standing architectural role of spiral staircases beyond their in-game function.
