Overview

John's Goods is the general store run by John. It is one of the island’s core service buildings, selling tools, production devices, consumables, and other useful items, while also buying a wide range of goods from the player. John will buy fruit, fish, bugs, rocks, and most other items, making the shop an important early and mid-game source of income as well as a place to restock essential equipment.

John first appears at the Visitors Site after the site is built. By building friendship with him through daily jobs and spending money in his store, he will eventually ask Fletch to move him in. Once his relationship reaches 1/4 heart, Fletch can be spoken to about town matters so John can settle permanently. After he moves in, John's Goods operates as a permanent store on the island.

To place the building, the Shop Deed is obtained from Fletch after John is ready to move in. The deed lets the player choose the location, but construction does not begin until all required materials are placed in the deposit box at the build site. The Town Debt must also be paid in full before another deed can be applied for. Once construction starts, the building takes 2 nights to complete.

John's stock is partly fixed and partly rotated. Some items are available year-round, while others cycle in and out of stock. Only one of each item can be purchased per day, even in multiplayer. His inventory includes basic survival and progression tools such as the Bug Net, Basic Axe, Basic Pickaxe, Fishing Rod, Shovel, First Aid Kit, Table Saw, BBQ, Furnace, Stone Grinder, Torch, Wheelbarrow, Hand Trolley, and the Mine Pass and Metal Detector once the necessary licenses are obtained. He also sells fruit and vegetables, with two types appearing in random rotation, including Bananas, Bush Lime, Cabbage, Green Bean, Kale, Onion, Potato, and Tomato.

The shop has a scale beside the counter that is used to weigh and appraise large items such as bee hives, fossils, rubies, emeralds, Mu eggs, and amber. These items do not reveal their exact weight or value until they are placed on the scale, which makes the counter useful for deciding whether to sell valuable finds immediately or hold onto them.

A few practical points are worth keeping in mind:

  • John’s visiting hours at the Visitors Site are from 7am to 4pm every day.
  • After he moves in, the store is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm and closed on Sunday.
  • If the player enters after closing time, John leaves the sales counter and trading is no longer possible.
  • Only one copy of each item can be bought per day, including in multiplayer.
  • Reaching 4 hearts with John rewards the Recycling Bin recipe.
  • John's Goods has an anniversary event held from 1 Summer to 7 Summer, starting in Year 2.

John's Goods therefore serves as both a progression milestone and a practical trading hub, combining essential shopping, item appraisal, and long-term town development into a single building.
