Deep Mine

Overview

The Deep Mine is an underground area accessed from the mine elevator on the mainland. Each visit generates a new layout for the day, but the drop-off point remains the same and matches the mine location on the mainland. When the player enters, the map is covered in dark fog that must be revealed by exploring, though the elevator icon appears on the map and can be tagged for easier navigation back.

The mine is dark and hazardous, but it also contains valuable resources and unique points of interest. The walls can be broken with a pickaxe or jackhammer, letting players carve direct routes instead of walking around obstacles. The map may contain pools of water that are 1 to 2 tiles deep, and a motorcycle can drive through them without taking damage. The outer boundary is a rock wall that can be destroyed once, but it remains impassable afterward.

Lighting is essential inside the Deep Mine. Useful light sources include Wooden Torches, a Torch, a Miner's Helmet, and a Candle hat. Glowing mushrooms also provide a small amount of light when held. The mine can become especially dangerous at night: at 11pm it begins to rumble, and at 12am, or Late, radiation spreads across the entire map and deals 1 damage every 2 seconds to the player. This radiation does not harm animals.

The Deep Mine is home to aggressive wildlife that will attack the player, and sometimes each other. Known spawns include Cave Bats, Bush Devils, and Glowing Crocos. Cave Bats are numerous, Bush Devils behave like their surface counterparts but never sleep, and Glowing Crocos can emit a poisonous area-of-effect cloud. Because of this, players should bring strong weapons, tools, and recovery items before descending. Food that increases Max Health and Max Stamina is especially useful, along with stamina recovery items and combat or mining buffs. Wattle Brew is particularly valuable for stamina recovery, Max Stamina, and mining bonuses.

A practical loadout often includes copper weapons and tools if iron gear is not available yet. The player can also use a Torch purchased from John’s Goods to stun animals, which is especially helpful against bats. Since the mine is full of enemies, carrying several weapons and plenty of healing supplies makes the trip much safer.

Several special features can appear inside the Deep Mine:

  • Treasure Rooms require two Old Keys to open their gates. They are shown as round grey structures on the mini map when the player gets close. Their walls cannot normally be destroyed, although the elevator can occasionally land on one and break the walls, giving direct access to the chest.
  • Weapons can sometimes be found inside Treasure Rooms, but they have reduced durability.
  • Wooden Barrels may appear as part of the mine’s resource set.
  • A Bat Shrine can spawn more than once in random locations. Feeding it 20 Bat Wings rewards the player with a Bat Glider.
  • Resources found inside the Deep Mine include Mining and Foraging materials, as well as Wooden Barrels.

The mine also contains collectible wildlife and fish. Glow Bugs can be caught with a Bug Net, and Deep Fish can be caught with a Fishing Rod. Because the environment is dangerous and time continues normally as on the surface, it is wise to plan trips carefully, mark valuable finds such as rubies for transport, and use a vehicle when possible. A motorcycle is especially useful, since animals will not aggro while the player is riding it and it can be loaded with resources for a quick trip back to the elevator.
