Overview

Builders' Hut is a workplace that employs Beavers and Bots as Builders to carry out construction-related work across a settlement. Each Builders' Hut assigns its workers the role of Builder, and these units perform the tasks required to erect new Buildings, fill construction sites with required Materials, reclaim Rubble, and demolish unwanted objects such as Natural Overhangs, Slopes, Blockage, Crops, Trees, and Bushes. Builders also assist with clearing and maintenance tasks around workplaces when there are no active construction duties.

Builders operate with two distinct kinds of tasks when constructing a Building. All available Builders will carry Materials to a building site, and at each construction milestone one Builder is assigned the actual construction task for that milestone. The Builder chosen to perform the construction action is usually the first to supply enough material to reach the milestone; if not, another available Builder is summoned for that specific construction action. When a worksite is unreachable, the usual remedy is extending Paths to the target location, though longer travel distances can increase the risk of Exhaustion or running Out of Energy if resource sources are also distant.

Builders have a functional range tied to path access: they can reach work sites up to 10 tiles away from a path. The preview range for reachable sites is visible when selecting a Builders' Hut or a District Center. A path does not need to be directly connected to a building site's entrance for Builders to work there, provided there is an accessible route from a pathway within the 10-tile reach. This allows Builders from different Districts to assist on construction sites that fall within their path network range. Wonders are an exception to the normal task-splitting rules: many Builders can construct Wonders simultaneously, but the site must be properly connected to a District Center through a Path or other pathing means and Builders can only enter Wonder construction sites through the intended entrance; otherwise the site is Unreachable Building and no work will be carried out.

Builders can work on sites under specific positional rules. They can build on adjacent tiles, on tiles one block above them (except when demolishing), and on any height below the Builder up to the topmost terrain closest to the Builder's feet. Sites completely covered by terrain cannot be reached from above. Iron Teeth Builders have the additional capability to build from within Tubeways or Vertical Tubeways, allowing construction from within those structures.

  • Builders are assigned by placing a Builders' Hut; Beavers and Bots employed there become Builders.
  • Construction tasks split into material-carrying by many Builders and milestone construction by a single Builder per milestone.
  • Builders reach sites up to 10 tiles from a path; extend Paths to solve Unreachable Object problems but watch for increased travel costs and Needs strain.
  • Wonders permit many Builders to work simultaneously but require proper pathing and use the intended entrance.
  • Builders can reclaim Rubble and demolish unwanted terrain and vegetation; when idle they help remove output from workplaces and otherwise stand at their hut doorway.
  • Historically, Builders were once assigned via a Builder Flag before Districts existed; Builders' Hut behavior evolved in early access and version 1 to have idle builders assist with output removal.
