Overview

The Observatory is a production building that generates Science. It functions similarly to the Inventor, serving as a high-yield science generator for a settlement. The Observatory is a 3x3 building with a height of 4; other buildings cannot be stacked on top of it. Despite its footprint, cost, and energy requirements, it is a worthwhile upgrade from the Inventor for players focusing on scientific progression.

The building employs up to 4 beavers. At full efficiency an Observatory produces 10 Science every 0.75 hours, which equates to about 3.33 Science per hour and roughly 53 Science per beaver over a 16-hour period. The Observatory fits into the books production chain, eventually contributing to book creation as a source of Science.

Construction and supply details include the use of pine resin; pine resin for the Observatory is harvested with the Tapper's Shack. Other components (such as planks and gears) are part of the required construction chain and are produced elsewhere in a settlement’s industry. Players must plan production chains to ensure the Observatory has the necessary inputs and workforce.

The Observatory has seen changes across updates. It was introduced in Update 1, made Folktail exclusive in Update 2, and in Update 7 gained the ability to use bot workers at the cost of 7,500 Science points. Older game versions and concept art exist; there is an obsolete Iron Teeth-era image of the Observatory.

  • Place the Observatory on flat ground with clear access for beaver travel to maintain consistent workforce efficiency.
  • Because it occupies a 3x3 footprint and has a height of 4, reserve vertical and horizontal space and avoid placing buildable structures on top.
  • Ensure steady supply of pine resin by connecting Tapper’s Shacks to your logistics network; also maintain production of mechanical components and planks elsewhere to meet construction and maintenance needs.
  • Use the Observatory as a long-term investment in Science generation once basic infrastructure (food, housing, and power) is stable.
  • Consider converting to bot workers (if unlocked and desired) using the science-cost option introduced in Update 7 to reduce reliance on beaver labor.
