Suspension Bridges
Overview
Suspension Bridges are long-span bridge structures used to cross deep gaps that would be awkward or impossible for shorter construction pieces. They are available in multiple lengths, from 1x1 through 6x1, and each length name refers to the span rather than the true footprint. Every suspension bridge is one tile longer than its name suggests because it includes an extra footing block that anchors it to solid ground.
Suspension Bridge 1x1 is actually 2 tiles long and can span a 1-tile gap.
Suspension Bridge 2x1 is actually 3 tiles long and can span a 2-tile gap.
Suspension Bridge 3x1 is actually 4 tiles long and can span a 3-tile gap.
Suspension Bridge 4x1 is actually 5 tiles long and can span a 4-tile gap.
Suspension Bridge 5x1 is actually 6 tiles long and can span a 5-tile gap.
Suspension Bridge 6x1 is actually 7 tiles long and can span a 6-tile gap.
All suspension bridges require two basic construction materials to build, and bridges larger than 3x1 also require an additional material. In Update 6 they became much cheaper than before and no longer use metal. The basic 1x1 bridge therefore serves as the cheapest way to start crossing a gap, while the larger versions scale up to carry much wider spans.
Construction is efficient because once a builder finishes the first suspension bridge segment, they can continue on to the next segment even without direct access to its base. Since the builder reaches the tip of the new segment, long gaps can be crossed quickly and without the stop-and-start behavior that would normally slow construction. This makes suspension bridges especially useful for building over large rivers, ravines, and other terrain breaks where rapid expansion is important.
A few practical points are worth keeping in mind:
- The first tile is always the footing, so the visible bridge span is shorter than the total structure.
- Their listed size is the usable span, not the actual footprint.
- Longer bridges are better planned as a chain of connected segments so builders can extend them smoothly across open space.
- They were introduced in Early Access and remain a standard late-early to midgame solution for crossing wide gaps.
